Technology in Education

Comments 13 April 2009

I have talked a little about my feelings on education. I decided that I wanted to do something about it instead of just talking about it.

So, I am starting a meetup group to figure out how much interest there is for teachers to learn more about how social media tools can be used in education.

I plan on this group holding educational sessions for teachers about social media and how these tools work.

Now the one thing I am stuck on is a name for the group. This is where you come in.

Should I name the group:
a) social media for education
b) social media for educators
c) teaching our teachers
d) other (please leave your suggestions)

UPDATE:

I am worried that “social media” is not the right term to use. I don’t want people to assume that this is about teaching teachers how to use facebook and twitter. If that is something that they are interested in than I am willing to explore that.

However, I wanted this to be more about creating communities and social space for your classroom, or group projects etc, that will engage kids outside of the classroom and help them to learn in a social way.

It revolves around the idea that learning is really just sharing information. And isn’t sharing what the internet is all about? I want to show teachers how these tools work and foster their imaginations about how they can work these tools into their curriculum.

I worry that using buzz words like “social media” and terms like”2.0″ aren’t really going to attract teachers.

Thoughts?

how about new media instead of social media?
  • "Social Media" and "Web 2.0" are definitely marketing terms and may turn teachers off. We're trying to build a network of dance teachers using facebook and other means but it's quite hard to talk about these things without mentioning the dreaded buzz words!
  • This is a terrific idea! Just today I was playing around with the term 'meaningful technology' -- using technology to make a difference in people's lives. When I looked it up, I found some examples in education... and then came across your meet up. How fortuitous! I am definitely joining.

This sounds like an amazing idea! I'm currently student teaching at the LaGuardia High School of Music & the Performing Arts (working on my Masters at SVA for Art Ed)...right now specifically in the Computer Graphics classes. We've started working on interactive environment projects and I've been trying to integrate ideas about usability and how new media opens the opportunity to reach millions via the web. Love your idea!

As far as a name I like Tech4Teachers and Education 2.0...I'm just wondering if Tech4Teachers is too broad if you'd like to focus primarily on social media and Education 2.0 is very clever which I like but if you are trying to reach the older generation and encourage them to integrate this technology I can vouch that many of them have never heard of the term "Web 2.0" thus it is something to consider.

Keep me posted and let me know if you'd like some help. I'd love to get involved with something like this. Kudos for making it happen!

    Found you on Twitter
  • That is awesome! I actually have a friend who is a teacher at LaGuardia, he was my high school chorus teacher.

I would love to hear your suggestions for a name, and talk with you more about getting teaching students involved with this project.
  • Agreed about use of the phrase "social media."

The phrase already has connotations that maybe should be avoided.

What about something more generic, like Teachers & Tech, or Tech4Teachers...

I'm still a fan of Education 2.0... I imagine any teacher who'd be interested in learning more about how to use technology in the classroom would understand.

I'm really excited that you're taking the initiative on this and can't wait to join up!
  • Some other great suggestions:
"teaching with social media"- that was from my mom
    "education 2.0"
  • I think Social Media for Educators is probably the best name. I think that Teaching Our Teachers implies that the teachers are not involved and that's not what you want and it speaks down to the teachers a bit. I'll help in whatever way you'd like!
