Why I’m not using Tweetdeck for iPhone

View Comments 21 June 2009

This week Tweetdeck finally announced Tweetdeck for iPhone, and the internet went crazy. I was seeing tons of tweets about how awesome it was, and how many people were switching from Tweetie to Tweetdeck.

If you haven’t had a chance to take a look, here are the listed features. I have marked in bold the features that are unique to Tweetdeck:

  • Tweet directly from your iPhone or iPod Touch.
  • Manage multiple Twitter accounts.
  • View notifications for new tweets received.
  • Use columns to create your personal dashboard.
  • Simply sync to set-up
  • Continuously updates between your desktop and iPhone.
  • Create Groups to easily follow all your friends.
  • Follow topics in real-time with saved searches.
  • Reply to tweets and send direct messages.
  • Easily re-tweet messages.
  • Share photos with Twitpic and YFrog.
  • Shorten links with your favourite URL shortener.
  • Follow and un-follow people.
  • Shake your iPhone to refresh columns.

So of course I did what everyone else did and downloaded the app (it was free) but within the first few seconds of using it I noticed a huge missing feature. Go to User! I wanted the ability to type in someones username and see their tweets, followers, and be able to DM them. Within Tweetie this was a snap. You simply click the ‘more’ tab, and click ‘go to user’, then just type in the persons twitter handle and you are good to go.

This feature is especially helpful when you want to DM or @reply someone who you had not recently had a conversation with. In tweetdeck the only way to get to a userscreen is to click on that person’s tweet. So they would have had to have recently tweeted in order for you to find them. Well what if they haven’t tweeted in days, then what are you supposed to do?

Here is an example of what a user’s profile page will look like in Tweetdeck and then Tweetie.

I understand the usefulness of having columns, of having it sync with your desktop app, and putting people into groups. But without the basic feature so search through users, I cannot use Tweetdeck. So until that changes, it’s Tweetie all the way.

A friends thoughts on Twitter

View Comments 20 June 2009

So today I went to my local Apple store with my friend Rosie because her iPhone had gotten the white screen of death and we needed to get it replaced. While hanging out we started talking about Twitter. I was very interested to hear about her experiences with twitter. She has had an account for a while but only started using it regularly this May. She said she started twittering during finals week because she just wanted to tell everyone everything and then she remembered that she could do that with twitter.

She told me that she felt like she didn’t think she was really using it correctly. I told her that there really isn’t a “correct” way to use twitter, but I was curious as to what made her think that.

She had some really interesting insights about how she uses twitter and ways she would like to see it be improved. These were things that I had not really heard from a lot of users or really from the general tech community so I thought I would share them with you all.

The first thing that she felt was missing was a facebook type of “wall-to-wall” view, for your conversations back and forth with one person. I know that there are some apps that do this but Rosie mainly uses the main twitter web page when she is at a computer and twitterific on her iPhone. She would like these features to be built into the main twitter site.
However you can use search.twitter.com/advanced to search for conversations between specific people.

Advanced Twitter Search

She also was really wishing that she could see her list of followers/following in alphabetical order. This was something I never felt the need for but I was really wondering if other people might find this helpful as well.

Rosie also became frustrated that she could not just DM anyone. She wants to be able to have a private conversation with anyone, no matter who is following who. She said that it was kind of strange that you might be able to have a one-way DM conversation if you were DM-ing one of your followers who then could not DM you back because you were not following them.

Her last insight was that she felt that the interface and general feel of twitter was a little childish. She couldn’t really explain why she felt that way, but I thought it was interesting none the less.

If you want to follow her she is @rosesness on twitter.

I would love to hear your thoughts on her thoughts.

the new iphone facebook app is awesome

View Comments 30 September 2008

Today facebook launched version 2 of its iPhone app and it is 100% better than the original. The new app adds basic facebook functionality that it was originally missing. Notifications are there and you have a real news feed with some functions that are even better than facebook’s actual site.

One of my favorites is the new news feed. It allows you to see how many comments any certain post has, and let you add one right from the news feed. Another great feature in the news feed is the bar on the top. You slide your finger horizontally across the bar to switch the news feed you are viewing. It implements friend groups so you can only look at the news feed of people you want to see. It also lets you look at the news feed for certain facebook apps. The inbox has been updated, showing a much easier to read conversation. And as always there is facebook chat.

my trip so far

View Comments 21 August 2008

So as some of you may know, I am in southern California this week, visiting some friends, going to a church conference, and on Friday I will fly up to San Fran to visit some grad schools up in the Bay Area. So far my trip had been a lot of fun, and I know you must all be missing random sarah updates but here is a quick recap!

Flew to Oakland..had a 2 hr layover, got in to Long Beach…waited on the ground for 30 mins after a whole jet blue flight with NO TV :( Got to my friends house, hacked my iPhone…went live on Qik…A LOT!

Found out you can be a vegetarian and still eat In-N-Out burger ::yum!:: …streamed on Qik some more…had great green tea :) … drove and drove and drove (cause no one walks in Cali) ate at Marie Callender’s (it was ok) went to Wal-Mart for the first time (did you know they sell goldfish?) , tried to stream on Qik but there was no 3G in Wall-Mart :( Searched for fellow vegetarians…not much luck …. almost met up with Gary Vaynerchuk in LA but he had to leave early :( …. played with friends… went to a lot of church meetings… and now I am writing this post when I probably should be taking a nap :)

So Friday night I fly up to San Fran and hopefully I will be doing a lot of live streaming on Qik! If you want to make sure you will always know when I am live you can follow me on twitter

Hacked my iphone 3G

View Comments 17 August 2008

So when I had a first the iPhone I was very afraid to hack my phone. I knew a lot of people who had it hacked and loved it. But I was holding out for 2.0 and the app store. To me it didn’t seem like there were any killer apps I NEEDED to hack my phone for. Until now… A few days ago I posted that Qik had come out for the iPhone 3G but only through hacked iPhone’s. Since the iPhone technically does not record video, Apple could not allow an app that would stream video live to the internet. But Qik released it anyway for hacked phones.

Now since live video is something that I love, this was enough to make me hack my iPhone. So I did! Last night using the iPhone dev teams Pwnage tool it was really very simple to hack the phone. So you might be wondering why I feel safer now than before? I guess it comes from the fact that when you hack an iPhone running 2.0 you still have access to the app store. So all the other apps I am running are Apple approved apps so I feel safer. Plus I know I can always restore the phone to the original software. So I have added a Qik embed to the random sarah live page, and you can follow me on Twitter for updates when I go live

Evernote

So even before I had my new iPhone I had been using the new iPhone 2.0 software and I feel like I should tell all my readers when I find an app that I love, that you might not know about.
It’s called Evernote and it is not only an iPhone app but also a desktop app and a web based app.

photo

So what does it do? It allows you to save notes (written, photos, and even voice notes) these notes then sync with the app on your computer and can even be accessed online from anywhere.
Now I know what you are thinking… Sounds cool but whats the killer feature? The killer feature comes after you have been using it for a while. You amount this whole database of things you thought, saw, or heard and you can access them from anywhere.
So I think you should give this a try. And see how you like it. Let me know if you agree or disagree?

Welcome!

Thanks for visiting my blog!

It might look a little different since the last time you saw it, but take a look around and let me know what you think!
