I am a geek: user generated edition

So I know that there are more people who would love to proclaim on video that they are geeks.

I need to get a copy of the I AM A GEEK script (or someone can transcribe it and send me the text)

Then record your video and place the file (MPEG 4 please) in the drop at drop.io/iamageek (the password should be iamageek)

UPDATE:

I got a copy of the official script. It seems like we might want to add our own lines so here is what I am proposing. If you want to read the original script (or just parts of it) please do so, and if you want to come up with your own original lines to put in then that’s great. We will have to just work it all out in the editing.

I got the script from Lon Harris who co-wrote it with Shira Lazar. Also the official twitter account for I am a Geek tweeted this yesterday:

Which brought a ton of interest to what we are trying to do. They are excited to see the finished product.

So here is the script:

Hey.

My name is _______ and I am a geek!

I’m not a nerd or a spaz…

and I don’t hang out all day in my parent’s basement…

and drink Mountain Dew and energy drinks…

and I don’t play Dungeons and Dragons or Magic the Gathering,

although I’m sure they’re really really fun.

Don’t judge me based on my lifecast

I have a Tumblr blog,

not a MySpace account.

I speak Python and CSS, not Klingon,

Java Script is not a play about coffee

I can proudly help you leverage your personal brand.

I believe in communicating, not Super-Poking…

I have followers not friends

And by the way tweet is a verb, twitter is a noun

Just owning a Nintendo Wii does not make you a “gamer”

Just because I’m constantly connected to my iphone doesn’t mean I’m not listening.

And yes, there is an app for that.

You write a blog post, not “a blog”

And it is pronounced “meem,” not “mimi”

This is already way over 140 characters

The Internet will not steal your identity

The World Wide Web connects 1 trillion web pages, 2 billion Flickr photos, 150 million blogs, 36 million Facebook profiles and 5 million Twitter accounts

And I just got all that data on Wikipedia, but you don’t have to take my word for it.

end script

If you have any questions please leave them in the comments or email me

I have essentially 0 following here on the Internet, but I'd love to be a part of this video if I can get a webcam up and running in time.

    Furry cows moo and decompress.

  2. sarahcooley says:

    there is no following requirement
just a desire to declare that you are a geek

  3. sarahcooley says:

    AWESOME! #iamageek

  4. djsteen says:

    Rachel and I are in!

I'm getting the video transcribed now. It should take a day or two. :)

    Giddy up!

  5. heyitsRachel says:

You can definitely count me and Derek in :)

  6. JJJENNNNN says:

Wouldn't it be cooler if we came up with new statements and facts to say for this version?

If not, I choose to play the part of Wil Wheaton.

  7. djsteen says:

    I agree!

We could base things off the original video, but I think we could all bring our own touch to it. I don't really want to be iJustine… :P

Who has a narration voice cooler than Tay Zonday? It's a bummer Don LaFontaine past away!

Yes, I can rhyme. Maybe I'll do that in my video too.

When do we get access to the drop.io? It's password-protected right now.

  8. sarahcooley says:

I think it would be great if we put our own touches on it. It will be harder to edit together but I think it will make it a better video in the end.

The password to the drop.io is iamageek

  9. Daniel says:

Hola, la verdad no te entendí casi nada lo que has dicho, pero igual hay algo que me atrajo, la palabra geek, lastima que no se el idioma ingles,
    Saludos Sarah!!!!!!
    PD: tratare de traducirlo.

  10. joecarterjr says:

Great idea Sarah, count me in.

  11. Megan says:

if only my cam hadn't died. if you need a customized script, i'd love to help out that way.

  12. techtastic says:

im in, this is fabulous :)
it kinda annoyed e that all the sudden its hip to be a “famous” geek >.<

  13. J. Rabbitte says:

In, in, in. Absolutely there, and proud to proclaim that I am a geek.

  14. robblatt says:

Have we found a script yet? I'm in!

I'm in and I'd suggest that we use one of @charmcitygavin's announcer voices. It's not as iconic as Tay, but it's pretty darn good.

  15. I'm in. Let me know what to do, and when.

  16. Yeah, I'll dance too. Let me know what and when.. since #iamarealgeek

  17. Jorge says:

Count me in! Also there needs to be an update to the script there are 175 million facebook users and 35 million digg users.

Now I need to find some recording software for my PC…..hope i can make it.

    Great Initiative Sarah!!!!

  18. Sure, that would be great

  19. JJJENNNNN says:

    Sarah,

In case I'm not able to get around to it later, I dropped 3 mp4 clips: 1 line from the existing video, 1 original line, and 1 of me saying my name.

If any of those'll work, go ahead and use them. Otherwise, lemme know what you need.

  20. MacDavid says:

I will participate too. When is the deadline? I have a lot going on today and tomorrow, so I don't want to miss this.

  21. Roni says:

I'm TOTALLY IN! Did I miss the deadline?!?

  22. Hey Sarah,

I just uploaded a clip to drop.io. I hope it works. Let me know if it doesn't.

Once this is done, I'm definitely going to post it on Geek Force Five.

    Thanks!
    Chris

  23. sarahcooley says:

you didn't miss the deadline, since I didn't really set one. Just try and record a video and upload it asap :)

I guess I will stop accepting things when we have enough to put together the video. So far I don't.

  24. sarahcooley says:

Just watched Chris's submission, and it was awesome!

  25. JJJENNNNN says:

    I agree!  Some great points!

  26. I'm glad you both liked it. :-)

Just wondering: What's happening with this project?

  27. Nice article and great idea.. count me in..
